Concerning the Beginning of the End – Tiempos Nuevos (1912)

Philosophical considerations on the circulation of life, illustrated by modern colonial politics.

Italy – Hurls itself on Tripoli saying: “Don’t judge me as wrong, I am acting in the name of a superior civilization”. Turkey complains bitterly of such injustice.

Turkey – Murders whole tribes of Druze and Albanians, and declares: These are not good Catholics, but fanatical savages. Austria protests against such ignominy.

Austria – Takes over Bosnia and Herzegovina and justifies itself, declaring that it wants to introduce European trade in these countries. Russia is outraged.

Russia – Takes over Afghanistan, saying: “I do it only to spread European culture, therefore I send my Cossacks there to teach the Afghans the methods of European civilization.” England was irritated by such a crime.

England – Starves Indians to death and degenerates them with opium; declares that such a method is absolutely necessary to regulate the hunger that was most terrible before it had taken possession of India. France protests against these crimes and appeals to the European conscience.

France – Takes over Morocco, to put an end to the disorders that reign in this country. Germany shouts: catch the thief!

Germany – Rules with the “Knut” police in Alsace-Lorraine and tyrannizes Cameroon, to conquer the path of order and progress. Belgium protests against German tyranny.

Belgium – Commits the greatest atrocities in the Congo. Believes that this is the only way to provide a value to such men and countries that so far have done nothing in favor of production. Holland appeals to European civilization.

Holland – Brutally oppresses the natives of Java and Sunda, declaring that in a grand state, rebels cannot go unpunished. America raises the alarm and publicizes the atrocities of Holland.

America – Inhumanely exploits the Filipinos by forcing them to recognize its sovereignty. Japan protests with all its might.

Japan – Takes over Korea and wants to extract as many soldiers from there in twenty years as from Japan itself. China protests.

China – Demands from Tibet that they pay a huge contribution to the king to maintain ancient tradition. Russia declares that China is unjust.

Russia – Martyrs its political prisoners and organizes massacres against the Jews; declares that a great nation can develop when it gets rid of its rotten members. Italy criticizes the Russian executioners, and refuses to see the Czar, representative of barbarism.

Italy… Here the same story begins again. The beginning is not the beginning and the end is not the end.
